1 Kings 19:3-4 – Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree [Retama raetum], sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said… (NIV)

With a jerk my car was off the road, sliding through a field. I was miles from home when my tire blew out; and I was alone. I sat there scared and shaking. "Lord," I cried, "How much more can go wrong?" In my despair I almost didn't notice the man standing beside my car – he had seen and had come to help. God provided help even when I thought I was alone.

I can relate to Elijah's mood in the verse above. We know the Lord had other things for Elijah to do, but let's look at where he was at that moment. He was afraid and overwhelmed. He was alone. He was tired from his travels. Sounds familiar.

When we get to places where we are tired, alone, and afraid it's easy to forget that God wants to help us. We are tempted to sit down and say "I have had enough, Lord!" God understands that. He will be our Helper. He sent an angel to tend Elijah, a stranger to change my tire, and His Son to save us.

Prayer:  O Lord, You know our moments of despair, thank You for Your help and comfort in these times. Amen.
